Kinja'd!!!

The Mrs. and I, along with our brother-in-law (generous fella who’s kicking an extra out of pocket loan our way to help make it happen) put an offer on the above house last week. It was a lowball and we knew it. The offer was ignored. So, BIL requests a sit-down over coffee with the listing agent (also the owner) to come to an agreement over the price. He negotiates bigly business deal for a living, so Mrs and I stayed home, only telling him what our max offer would be beforehand. He called us afterwards and said “Congrats! You just bought a house!” The man looked my BIL in the eye, said “you’ve got a deal, send me the paperwork,” shook hands and walked out. Mrs. and I signed the offer ASAP, and sent it over to him. The offer expired at 5pm that day (this was Sunday), but by 6pm, we hadn’t heard anything back.

This GD SLIMY MFer used our signed, verbal-and-handshake-agreed-to offer to go out and gain leverage to get a higher offer, without even the (albeit still-slimy) courtesy of asking if we could match it. We only received a call that evening after he had accepted a verbal-only higher offer. What a shit businessman, and a shit human being.

I’ll gladly share his information with anyone wanting to buy a home in the Portland area so they can steer clear.

Ugh, that’s just heartbreaking. You were told you got the damn home. Fucking awful :(

Aye... The worst part is it had been on the market an uncommon 110 days. We had done a walk-through more times than I can count, but we were convinced there was no way to make it work financially. Then, my BIL offered to co-invest at the same time the VA finally approved my disability claim making it possible to afford the increased mortgage with nearly zero affect on our monthly finances (death to our savings, though). It sure seemed like it was going to work out.

If it was going to be death to your savings, maybe it was best that this one didn’t work out.

Another opportunity will come... Keep your chin up and your eyes out. It sounds like you have an amazing family.

Totally... Our current house is still gaining value, and it won’t be “way too small” until we have kiddo #2, who isn’t even a bun in the oven yet. Plus, I hate moving, so... silver lining? Plenty of fish in the sea and all that.

Think of yourselves as lucky not having been caught up in doing business with that kind of person.

If it’s any solace, think of it this way: He’s willing to lie and fuck you over for a few extra bucks. How do you know he’s not keeping mum about something wrong with the house that he’ll “forget” to disclose until after papers are signed?

I’ve never bought a house but from what I know about contracts he signed a document agreeing to something do you guys have a legal means of sticking it to him? Or did you more or less sign an estimate?

I’m glad the SOB won’t be getting any of my money. Also makes me think he could have been hiding something about the house.

No, that’s the problem... He gave a verbal confirmation of a deal and a handshake, then requested we send him the signed offer so it could be official. Then he ignored the offer until the timer ran out and admitted that he fucked us over. Technically not illegal, but slimy and shitty as all get out. BIL is well off and knows a lot of well-to-do folks in the community where this guy lives and does business. I can guarantee the extra $25,000 or so this guy slimed out of the other offer will cost him a great deal more in the long run.

I had a similar sad tale when I was house hunting. There was an untouched mid century modern that was sold for cash before we could get paperwork together. It was a known flipper so we offered him 20% over what he paid to buy it tomorrow, no work, just a big profit. He agreed...and ignored the contract. Then he ruined the house. Thankfully he did such a shit job on the flip that it sat on the market forever but it still hurts that I couldn’t save that one.

Sooooooo common in these parts. The house in this post was a flip. It was done pretty well, but there were still gawdy bullshit things done that I would reverse. And grey... gray walls, gray carpets, gray counters, they even painted the chimney gray- a sea of gray. But, he bought it for cash before it could even be seen, then split the lot to double his money. I wish I could have just gotten it before he could get to it.

What a scumbag move!

Here’s hoping the right home comes along at the right price at the right time and at the right terms.

I’ve actually been toying with the idea of moving to the east coast because I refuse to accept the housing prices and land assessments here. I’m sorry, but an eighth acre lot on a street littered with boarded up houses and blight, in the worst part of the worst city in the area is never going to he worth nearly a million dollars to me. Knockdown houses assessed at $16,000 sitting on lots the size of a thimble assessed at 800 grand.

Nah.

And I’ll never buy a condo, a townhouse, or a home governed by Strata/HOA. Never.

So it’s either a trailer in the middle of nowhere BC, or eastern bound where under 200 grand can buy you a 15 bedroom bed and breakfast and 40 or 50 gets you a modest home on acreage.

Weighing my options, lol.

We moved to Oregon from Florida in 2014. I still own a house there... 1,600 SF 3bd/2ba, 2 car garage, .25 acre lot, built in 2001ish. I paid $124,000 and property taxes are $1,100/year. Our Oregon home? 1,500 SF 3/1.5, 2-car garage, .25 acre... $300,000 and $4k/year in taxes. And we’re getting by CHEAP for our area!

Damn. I’ve never been to Oregon but for some reason I’ve always kind of wanted to move there. Hearing that certainly gives me pause.

Still the cheapest CoL on the West coast. My daughter growing up with her cousins, aunts/uncles and grandparents makes it worth it, but if it weren’t for them I’d be out. I miss the sun and the sand.

As an east coast resident: where is this phantom location you speak of?

I live somewhere they used to be “cheap” and now it’s creeping up; you already can’t get anything decent for under $300k. It feels worse now than it did in 2005-06.

Wow that’s insane. Like, worse than Lake property in New Hampshire where a cabin on 1/4 acre is $500k because waterfront. For $500k on the other side of the road you’d have 2,500sf and 15 acres.
